Praised for her “vocally brilliant European debut” (German Theater Rundschau) and her "silvery, floating soprano" (Bonn General-Anzeiger), American soprano Katrina Thurman possesses a distinctively beautiful and sizable instrument, which is enlivened by her maggetic, fiery performance, her dramatic intent, and infallible comic timing.
In the 2007-2008 season, Ms. Thurman was seen as Rose in Lakmé and Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte with Tulsa Opera, and she will again joined Glimmerglass Opera as the cover of Bianca/Lois Lane in Kiss Me Kate and a soloist in the concert “We Open in Paris” with Steven Blier. In the 2008-2009 season, Ms. Thurman will make her debut with Lyric Opera of Kansas City as Musetta in La Bohème. She will then join Florida Grand Opera as Ellen in Lakmé, Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, and the cover of Clorida in La Cenerentola. Ms Thurman will round out the season with Amy in Little Women for Syracuse Opera. Last season, Ms. Thurman made her role debut as Musetta in La Bohème with Piedmont Opera and was hailed as being "perfect both in voice and in her depiction of 19th century sluttiness, all the more appropriate for her later transformation to an empathetic, caring person during Mimi's death scene" (Classical Voice of North Carolina). She also created the role of Martha in the world premiere of Romulus by Louis Karchin with American Opera Projects and the Guggenheim Museum's Works & Process series. Later in the same season, she joined the Young American Artists Program at Glimmerglass Opera where she was cheered for her poise and panache when she jumped in as a cover for Diana in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld while performing three chorus personalities in tandem. Also at Glimmerglass, Ms. Thurman portrayed the role of Ninfa and covered La Musica in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo and covered Venus, Minerva, and Cupid in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld.
Recent highlights include Ms. Thurman's French opera debut as Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos with Opéra National de Lyon following her critically acclaimed German debut as Vénus in Rameau's Dardanus, and Mrs. Naidoo in Phillip Glass’ Satyagraha with Oper Bonn. In response to her performance as Alej in Janácek’s From the House of the Dead with Oper Bonn, the Cologne Rundschau hailed “Katrina Thurman was the highlight in this somber opera without women and heroes.”, while the Bonn General-Anzeiger acclaimed “ . . . Katrina Thurman as Aljeja shares moments of most tender intimacy.” Other recent engagements include Bianca in La Rondine with Utah Symphony & Opera, her New York City recital debut at Trinity Church in the Noonday Concert Series, and Lightfoot McClendon in a tour of Cold Sassy Tree with Opera Omaha’s Heartland Opera Theater.
Ms. Thurman won first place and audience choice in the 2008 Classical Singer Magazine AudComps and was a prize winner at the Connecticut Opera Guild Competition. The Schuyler Foundation for Career Bridges named Ms. Thurman a grant recipient in 2007 & 2008. She was also recipient of a grant from the Anna Sosenko Assist Trust in 2007 and she received 3rd prize in the 2006 Fritz & Lavinia Jensen Foundation Competition. She has received awards from the William C. Byrd Competition and the National Opera Association and was a district alternate and district finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Ms. Thurman holds a Master of Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Oklahoma City University.
